Situated between the popular destinations of Tokyo and Kyoto, the mountainous of region of Nagano is the literal heart of Japan and a road less travelled by many international visitors. This tour transports you to the alpine oasis of Kamikochi in the spectacular Hida Mountains and Matsumoto Castle before reaching Nagano on Day 1, and visits to Zenko-ji – one of the oldest and most important Buddhist temples in Japan – and the world-famous Jigokudani Snow Monkey park on Day 2. Day 1: Kamikochi - Matsumoto

Stop At: Kamikochi Visitor Center, Matsumoto Nagano Prefecture
Explore the stunning alpine valley of Kamikochi, renowned for its pristine natural state and walk its trails and discover its highlights including Asuza River, Taisho Pond, and Kappa Bridge.
Duration: 3 hours

Stop At: Matsumoto Castle, 4-1 Marunouchi, Matsumoto 390-0873 Nagano Prefecture
Explore the historic grounds including entering the castle itself and climbing to the top of its 6-story.

Day 2: Zenkoji-Temple - Snow Monkey Park

Stop At: Zenko-ji Temple, I-491 Motoyoshicho, Nagano 380-0851 Nagano Prefecture
Explore Zenko-ji, one of Japan’s oldest and most important Buddhist temples, and home to the first known Buddhist statue to be brought to Japan.

Lunch is at one of Nagano's most popular restaurants, Monzen Terrace Enya* and includes a guided 'sake' tasting experience, all led by your guide. The lunch menu changes between seasons but always offers a tasty chance to enjoy Nagano's renowned food culture.

*On rare occasions we may not be able to use Monzen Terrace Enya, in which case we would switch to another, comparable restaurant.

Stop At: Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, 6845 Heion, Yamanouchi-machi, Shimotakai-gun 381-0401 Nagano Prefecture
Your guide will lead you into the park and introduce to everything that makes these creatures so unique and adorable. As home to the only troop of monkeys in the world known to bathe in hot springs, this is one of Nagano's best experiences.

      • Please wear suitable shoes and clothing for alpine walking in Kamikochi and the Snow Monkey Park
      • Kamikochi is located at 1500 meters above sea level and weather can change quickly. Please ensure you have clothing suitable for changing conditions including rain and cooler temperatures. In summer an spring, temperatures between 7 to 22℃ are typical, but in autumn - October and November - temperatues are likely to be between 0 to10℃. The monkey park is located at 850 meters, with similar outdoor clothing suitable for your visit.
      • During the winter it is common to see the Snow Monkeys enjoying the hot spring bath, however from spring up to autumn there will be times where the monkeys play or eat in the water, however please note that the monkeys are wild animals and there is no guarantee that there will be monkeys in the bath.
      • There are a few days in the year that the monkeys might not come down to the park. In such case we will provide an alternative activity.
      • Guests are required to follow the Snow Monkey Park rules at all times. Guests are not permitted to touch, hold, feed or bathe with the monkeys at any time. There are no barriers separating the monkeys from visitors to the park. Please ensure you keep a minimum distance of 1 to 2 meters between yourself and the monkeys. Your guide will explain the rules prior to entering the park.
      • Travelers should have a moderate physical fitness level
      • For accommodation in Nagano City, we typically use Hotel Kokusai 21. There are occasions when the hotel may not be available and we will need to book another, comparable hotel in Nagano City. If you would like to confirm your exact hotel please enquire at time of booking.
