The west wing of the butterfly-shaped island is just a few feet away from Grande-Terre, yet so different. Separated from Grande-Terre by a narrow sea channel called la Rivière Salée, the Basse-Terre region is a cluster of hiking trails, verdant mountains, natural hot springs, fabulous rainforests, rivers and waterfalls. Much of the interior is protected within Guadeloupe National Park, a biosphere reserve with an extraordinary biodiversity, while the beaches around the island offer an incredible variety of sand colours depending on how close they are to the volcano. Basse-Terre is also widely marked by history and culture; it is home to archaeological sites such as Le Parc des Roches Gravées, Hindu temples and Catholic churches as well as military forts. It is definitely a true paradise for those who love the outdoors, trekking and canyoning.

Meet us at 8:30 am at the Pointe-à-Pitre cruise port or at your hotel. You will leave the Grande-Terre island by crossing the bridge of La Rivière Salée and will pass on the left wing of Guadeloupe to go up towards Sainte-Rose.

In Sainte-Rose you will make a first stop at a rum distillery. A rum museum, located on the distillery estate, tells the story of rum and explains its development process. It also exhibits large collections of sailboats and insects. You will then follow the west coast of Basse Terre in the direction of Deshaies and pass by the beach of Grande Anse, one of the most beautiful on the island with a beautifully preserved bay. You will have lunch in one of the many restaurants on the beach.

You will then go to the Cocoa House. Thanks to didactic panels and tools displayed in a small tropical garden, you will learn that chocolate is made from cocoa. The pods from which the beans are extracted, are first roasted, then crushed before being kneaded for a long period of time in order to get an impalpable fondant. The walk in the botanical garden allows you to visualize the cacao plants at different stages of their growth, but also the crops that used to make the island's richness such as coffee, roucou and pineapple. And of course there will be tasting at the end of the visit.

Your guide will then take the Route de La Traversée. The Route de la Traversée is the only road that crosses the mountains of Basse-Terre, through and through. It connects the town of Petit-Bourg to the town of Pointe-Noire through the mountains. Along the way there are many natural sites worth a visit: La Cascade aux écrevisses, (a waterfall with easy access), La rivière Corossol (picnic area by a river), La Maison de la Forêt with its hiking trails in the forest, La rivière Bras David (another picnic area by a river) and last but not least, the Mamelles zoological and botanical park. You will enjoy swimming in one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the island. What could be better than finishing your trip with an open air Thalassotherapy session! You will come out fresh and invigorated for the rest of the day.
