The tour will be split in two parts with a 15- to 30-minute break in the between. Start with a 1 hour tour of the Colosseum first. Here, you will learn about the innovative techniques used by the ancient Roman engineers to build this monumental amphitheater and how it survived through the centuries. You will discover the political and social reasons that led to its construction as well as the games that took place in it. But most excitingly, you will get to have a real sense of the Colosseum and of the events that took place in it, by entering the very exclusive underground areas and the arena. These areas are not accessible to regular ticket holders. The underground areas were the backstage for the games which took place in the arena above. Here you will see the rooms where animals such as tigers, bears and giraffes were locked up before being employed in the games as well as the labyrinths where the frenetic preparations of the games and of the spectacle’s scenery took place. Then you will walk into the arena through the Porta Libitinaria itself. As a final part of the Colosseum tour, you will get access to the first ring, from where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the arena and the surrounding area.
In the second part of the tour, visit the nearby area of the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. This tour will last about 45 minutes after which you can stay within the area and explore it further for as long as you wish. Here you will get a portrait of what everyday life in ancient Rome was like, since the Roman Forum was the economical, political, juridicial and social center of the city.
