During this private tour from Berlin, visit one of the first concentration camps established by Nazi Germany — Sachsenhausen. Learn about the events that led to the creation of this forced labour camp that imprisoned 200,000 people and murdered thousands. Today, the entire site serves as a memorial and a museum dedicated to the prisoners who lived and died there. Description
Begin this daylong trip to Sachsenhausen in the morning, when you meet your private guide at the Hackescher Markt train station in East Berlin. Board the train for a 45-minute ride to the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum in Oranienburg, making sure you've brought along the appropriate money for your fares and entrance fees. (It is also recommended to pack a lunch, water, and snacks for this trip.)
Opened in the summer of 1936, Sachsenhausen eventually imprisoned more than 200,000 people. Slave laborers were put through a punishing schedule wherein all prisoners were starved, overworked, and deprived of sleep. Horribly unhygienic conditions made sure that contagious disease was rife in the camp. Tens of thousands of prisoners died of starvation, forced labor, mistreatment, or systematic execution.
Be led through the site’s history by your specially trained, licensed guide. Learn more about the complex, sensitive history of the concentration camp system as you visit important sites including the camp prison, the Jewish barracks, the roll call yard, Tower A, the infirmary barracks and pathology lab, the camp kitchen, and "Station Z" — the execution grounds.
You'll have time to read and explore some exhibitions alone, as well as with your guide. At the end of the tour your guide will accompany you on the train back to Berlin, where you'll arrive about 6 hours after you left.Highlights
