Travel to the Alentejo and into the deepest part of a cork forest on this 2-hour guided tour from Redondo. Take a walk to explore the cork forest and learn about the harvesting of the cork at a farmhouse estate run by the same family for six generations. Enjoy personalized attention on this small group tour that is limited to twelve people, as well as a traditional cork-strippers' lunch, if chosen.
Having booked the morning or afternoon departure, meet your local driver at the Museu do Vinho de Redondo and travel to the farmhouse estate in the Alentejo. For six generations the Mollet family has made a living on their 1,400 acre estate by sustainably managing cork forests, rearing sheep, and making fine wine.
Upon arrival, meet your guide, a local archaeologist and conservationist. Start with a cup of tea, coffee, or a cool refreshment then head out on a 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) walk into the deepest parts of the cork forest, across rolling hills and through cork forests, olive groves, and vineyards in a landscape occasionally broken by a medieval fortress or an abandoned chapel.
During your walk your guide explains everything you need to know about the cork trees and the cork cycle (cork stripping, storage, and manufacturing). Also learn about local fauna and flora, and all of the farm activities including honey production, vineyard wine production, Iberian pig fattening, and harvesting olive groves.
With luck, you might come across an Egyptian mongoose, bustards, wild boars, hoopoes, bee-eaters, and booted eagles.
Later, head to the farmhouse and visit the shop where you can find the finest products the estate has to offer (cork handicrafts, biologic olives and olive oil, honey and, of course, wine). Lastly, enjoy a traditional cork stripper's three-course meal in a quiet family run restaurant.
Your tour concludes with a drop-off back at the Museu do Vinho de Redondo.Highlights
