Built during the communist regime, Transfagarasan was considered a strategic road between Transylvania and Southern Romania. It's overwhelming landscapes have transformed it, however, into one of the most important tourist attractions of Romania. Crossing the highest part of the Carpathians, the construction of the Transfagarasan required an enormous amount of work and planning. Its story is fascinating and you'll discover it during this day trip.
On the way back to Sibiu, we stop in Carta to visit the ruins of the only Cistercian monument in Romania. Dating from the troubled medieval centuries, the Abbey from Carta was once the main center of the powerful Cistercian order in the Transylvanian space.
